Description: Backchanneling is feedback provided in communication that shows attention and understanding. As interpreters, we can use a variety of backchanneling techniques to develop trust and rapport with our Deaf and hearing clients. This workshop will focus on a simple way to incorporate backchanneling into a variety of mock interpreting situations.

About the Presenters:
Janice Woods, CI/CT, QA 5/5: Janice is a CODA and has been Oklahoma QAST certified since 1995. In 1995, Janice also received her Bachelor's in Counseling, with an emphasis in Services to the Deaf, and a minor in interpreting from ECU. Janice earned her RID CI/CT in 1997. Since then, she has worked as part-time faculty with the Interpreter Training Program at OSU-OKC. She has also had the privilege of serving on advisory boards/committees with QAST, OSU-OKC and TSHA. She enjoys the varied settings and clientele that freelance work provides. She has also worked with Sorenson since 2006. She makes her home in Stillwater but provides interpreting services throughout the state.

D’Andra Parsons has been Oklahoma QAST certified since 2001, earning her RID CI/CT in 2008. Her degrees include a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Oklahoma and a M.Ed. from the University of North Florida in ASL/English Interpreting. In 2018, she earned the CCI credential from the Oklahoma Supreme Court. She is also registered with the State Department of Education as an approved educational interpreter and holds current SDE classroom teacher certifications as well. D’Andra has served as a Member at Large with OKRID and currently serves as Vice President for the 2019-2021 term. Since 2013, D’Andra has worked as part-time faculty with the Interpreter Training Program at OSU-OKC. She enjoys the varied settings and clientele that freelance work provides. She makes her home in Davis but provides interpreting services throughout the state.
