People with Disabilities Awareness Day

Are you ready to network? Celebrate outstanding accomplishments? If so, join us for People with Disabilities Awareness Day from noon to 4:30 p.m., March 5, 2024, at the Oklahoma History Center.

Let's take action! Plan on coming, bring a friend or two and network with the more than 70 disability-centric exhibitors. They bring a wealth of information and might introduce you to new programs.

New SSP Training Workshop 2022

Sight-Hearing Encouragement Program – Shep is now announcing the SSP training on August 26th and 27th, 2022. It will be held at OSU-OKC.

What is a SSP you ask?

SSP is a Support Service Provider as individuals who help members of the DeafBlind community, in allowing them to borrow your eyes and ears to encourage and promote them in being independent. SSPs do transporting or meeting at places as a guide and an environmental explainer. This helps bridge the gap for those with dual sensory loss in empowering yet still promoting DeafBlind individuals in making their own choices in life.

If you are interested in becoming a SSP and bridging that gap of information and accessible for the DeafBlind, please sign up now!

You will need attend both dates, August 26 and 27th to complete training and testing to become a certified and paid SSP.

There are three SSP levels, which depend on your skill level. This is will evaluated through our testing process with DeafBlind leaders who will determine your level.

Level one – guides, explains environmental information and speaks with a clear voice. This level does not use and doesn’t have to be a signer of sign languages.

Level two – guides, explains environmental information in a clear voice or no voice (if Deaf), uses close-up sign language in beginner to intermediate signing of ASL, PSE and or SEE.

Level three – guides, explains environmental information completely hand in hand using tactile signing of: ASL, PSE and or SEE. Is also a fluent signer with some tactile, and Pro-tactile included.

Six Flags Over Texas is happy to host Deaf Awareness Day for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing on Saturday, December 14, 2019! During this event, select shows will be interpreted for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Marvin D. Loeb Scholarship Fund for the TCC Sign Language Interpreting Program.
Attention future interpreters and ASL Clubs – this is your chance to see interpreters in different settings throughout your visit to the park!

The Tulsa Drillers and their generous sponsors offer tickets through non-profits like TSHA. May 14 is your first chance for complimentary tickets through TSHA this season.


May 14 is the first of several "MADM" dates that will be available this season. They are: May 14, June 18, July 9 & 23, and August 27.

 

While TSHA has requested tickets for all of these games, we never know IF or HOW MANY tickets we will receive until shortly before each game.


If you are interested in receiving tickets for any of these games, please submit:

·    your name

·    which date(s) you would like to attend

·    the maximum AND minimum number of tickets you could use

·    whether there are deaf / hard of hearing people in your group

Be advised that submitting a request does not mean that you WILL receive tickets, since the supply is limited. You will receive an email letting you know IF and HOW MANY tickets you are getting. These will need to be picked up at TSHA. If you cannot attend after getting tickets, let TSHA know ASAP, as we have a waiting list.

This is a day of fun and fitness for EVERYONE! 

Walkers - this is a family-friendly track, with kids' activities, snacks and water, a DJ keeping things lively, and friendly people to chat with.

Runners - go for your Personal Best on this flat track!

Fun Run: 9:00 A.M. - 1 Mile walk/run - Cost: $20.00
5K Run: 9:30 A.M. - 5K (3.1 Mile) walk/ run - Sanctioned, chip-timed - Cost: $35.00

On-site registration the day of the race opens at 8:00 a.m. Race announcements will be in voice AND sign language! 

Register by April 3 to ENSURE a t-shirt in your size.

Proceeds help TSHA, a non-profit TAUW partner agency, to provide quality services to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, and their friends and family. Awards will be given 3 deep to males and females in the standard age categories.

Starting at 10 a.m., plan to make your way to the south end of the Modern Living Building where you can enjoy entertainment by Deaf and Hard of Hearing performers and guest speakers. There will be several Deaf organizations and Deaf vendors offering valuable information, resources, networking opportunities, and arts and crafts. You won’t want to miss this fun-filled day at the Oklahoma State Fair.

August Silent Dinner

Silent dinners are THE place to come and practice sign language in a non-threatening environment.  All levels of skill are welcome from very beginning learners to native signers.

Where? The Woodland Hill's Mall Food Court is the standard location of Silent Dinner.   The mall's address is at 7021 S Memorial Dr in Tulsa.  This is the NE corner of 71st and Memorial.  There are various food vendors to choose from; however, food purchase is not a requirement.

When? Come after work as it begins around 6:00pm. Feel free to stary until your hands get tired or until the mall closes at 9:00pm.

This could mean Deaf Ed teachers, Interpreters, Paras, TAs, Speech Paths, Psychs, Admin, Counselors, Parents of Deaf Children, Deaf Members of the community, College Students or other Professionals that work with D/HH children.
